to give up the position of being king or queen

  • Japan’s Emperor Akihito has announced at a ceremony that he is abdicating, in his final official address to his people.(stuff.co.nz)
  • Emperor Akihito becomes first Japanese monarch* to abdicate in 200 years(CNN)

  • Japan’s emperor declares abdication marking the end of an era(stuff.co.nz)
  • Japanese Emperor Akihito announced his abdication at a palace ceremony today in his final address(TVNZ)

●退位する:stand down / step down

  • It’s the first time a Japanese monarch has stood down for the heir* in 200 years.(TVNZ)
    *heir:継承者
  • Akihito is the first Japanese emperor to step down in more than 200 years(BBC)

●即位する、皇位に就く:ascend/take the throne

  • Japan’s Emperor Naruhito has formally ascended the throne, a day after his father abdicated.(bbc)
  • Japan’s new Emperor Naruhito ascends the Chrysanthemum* Throne(stuff.co.nz)

  • Akihito, who is 85 and took the throne in 1989, became popular for reaching out to the people.(The Washington Post)
  • Japan’s Emperor Naruhito has pledged* to fulfil** his role as a “symbol of the state and unity”, in his first public address since taking the throne.(bbc)

●皇位を継承する:accede to the throne

“ascend the throne” と似た表現で、”accede to the throne” というフレーズもあります。

  • Crown Prince Naruhito accedes to the throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan on Wednesday following the Emperor’s abdication on Tuesday.( The Japan News)

●即位、皇位継承:accession to the throne

“accede” の名詞 “accession” を使った、”accession to the throne” で「即位、皇位継承」を表します。

  • Naruhito’s accession to the throne marks the start of the Reiwa era in Japan, a term taken from ancient Japanese poetry and translated as “beautiful harmony.”(stuff.co.nz)
  • The new emperor, Naruhito, delivered an address after his accession to the throne at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Wednesday.(The New York Times)

  • Crown Prince Akishino
