コロナ関連の英語のニュースを見ていて、よく使われているなと思うフレーズがあります。
それが今回取り上げる “get on top of 〜” です。

では、これらはコロナをどうするという意味なのでしょうか？
“get on top of 〜” の意味とは？
“on top of 〜” はそのまま訳すと「〜の上」ということですよね。「〜に加えて」という意味もありますが、それはここでは置いておきましょう。
「〜の上に」のイメージを膨らませていくとわかりやすいのですが、”get on top of 〜” とはこんな意味なんです↓

これらから分かるのは、状況や物事を「上手くコントロールして対処する」という意味ですね。
なので、辞書によっては「〜を支配する、征服する、〜に打ち勝つ、（事態を）収拾する」と書かれていますが、共通するのは「うまくコントロールして対処する（できている）」イメージです。
“get on top of the virus / Covid-19”
ここで、最初に紹介した、ニュースに出てきた文章を振り返ってみましょう。まずは、

は「コロナ感染（者）の急増をうまくコントロールして対処するために夜間外出禁止令を出した」となります。
日本語でしっくりくる言葉を見つけるのが難しいですが「感染を制御（抑制）する」「感染拡大を抑える」と言うとちょっとイメージしやすいかもしれません。

どれも “get on top of” を「制御する」と訳しましたが「〜の上に→〜を支配して→〜をうまくコントロールして対処する、対処できている」というイメージが大切です。
“on top of 〜” というフレーズは「〜」の部分に、”things” や “(one’s) work” などを入れて「うまくコントロールして対処して（できて）」という意味でもよく使われるので、ぜひ覚えておいてくださいね。
